Reducing clothing choices in france

According to news reports today the French have either banned the Burqa, niqab or veils. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find text of the actual bill to find out what has actually been banned as it makes quite a difference, mind as I don’t speak or read French it probably wouldn’t help if I could find the text of the bill. The French aren’t alone in such a ban as it’s already in place in Belgium and (allegedly) Syrian universities, however the details matter as all of them could be trivially worked around my anyone so minded to do so. Whilst it wouldn’t be as traditional as the niqab or a veil as the aim is to conceal ones face would a mask do, or a balaclava or even cunningly deployed scarf?

Ultimately the only way to prevent Muslim women covering their faces is to ban face coverings in general – which is no doubt much easier to do by expanding existing legislation (now where have we seen that before). As Legiron observed a while back it’s not about the veil but it is a bit of proposed EU legislation, which again will surely be much easier to force on all of us once it’s already in place in a few countries. After all then it’s just harmonisation of existing laws, so not such a big deal. So to make sure we can all be seen on CCTV and by FIT the Venice carnival will be killed as will “traditional” wedding and funeral garb, and we’ll all get to freeze our faces off in winter. Mind I do have a vested interest in being able to hide my face.

More power to the useless

I was going to write something about a few bits of recent news regarding HMRC, but life got in the way so I didn’t bother. However the Devils Knife covering the matter.

So go and read their article which apart from proposing some terribly sensible suggestions for radical tax reform also asks the question which was bugging me, and others. Namely why when the HMRC have just admitted PAYE errors affecting 1.5 Million people and over 6 years of backlog on tax returns would it be a good idea to give them any control over us actually getting our wages. Of course as Longrider observes it may just have been a kite flying exercise though common wisdom seems to be to assume that with such ideas is no matter what the reaction they tend to happen anyway. Also just think about the feature creep on this one, been issued an on the spot fine due to CCTV thinking you dropped litter no need to trouble you about it just take the money direct from your wages as it passes through central computer. Of course I’m sure that the state would do terribly well out of diverting all the rounding errors into it’s own coffers. Captain Ranty also points out the numerous errors they’re liable to make based on past track record which would no doubt also be a nice little earner on the interest front.

Rolling back legislation

As other people have already commented our new lords and master in the condem alliance don’t seem to be in a terrible hurry to remove all the bad legislation that our previous glorious leaders brought in to trample on our freedoms.

However over at The Register I learn that they are amending the utterly abysmal Digital economy act, there radical reform is that after you’ve failed to prove yourself innocent they won’t charge you to lodge an appeal. Oh unless of course too many people lodge “unnecessary appeals” in which case they will charge you.

Mind ISP’s are still being lumbered with 25% of the costs of the legal frame work so you’re unlikely to get to appeal as the ISP will just block your access before any legal costs mount up. If the rest of their reforms of legislation are of equally staggering scope they could probably save an awful lot of time and just not bother. They could still tell us they’d improved things as they obviously think we are that stupid.
