Alcohol aware

As I noted the other day this week is apparently Alcohol awareness week which apparently is using the hashtag #alcoholaware2012. Being the socially responsible type I plan to be making use of that to pass on useful tips for the alcohol aware through out the week. Another responsible drinker Misanthrope Girl pointed out that as a responsible drinker one should be aware of how much alcohol one has to hand and where the nearest offy is. Which as it’s been a busy year avoiding tax this seemed a good moment to follow her example and check just how much I have to hand, just in case (wouldn’t do to run out after all). So a quick count in the “cellar” and other places it runs out I currently have:

  • 25 gallons of various home brew beers (it’s been a good year)
  • 4 gallon of commercial beer
  • 5 gallons of home brew wine
  • 2 gallons of whiskey
  • 2.5 gallons of absinthe
  • 3 gallons of assorted other spirits
  • 23 random open bottles which I can’t be bothered to count

Which for the home brew means I’ve manged to avoid in the region of £300 pounds of tax, probably a bit more as I don’t tend to brew the weak stuff you get in most pubs and supermarkets these days. It does however leave me with a problem, what on earth am I going to drink at Christmas?

Oh and Alcohol Concern, I’ve never let a drink sneak up on me I hunt them down ruthlessly before they get the chance.

Something for a Monday

Apologies if you’ve seen this before, but something cheery for a Monday. A woman actually trying to hold politicians to account and calling on their inability to answer questions – on question time. The politicians looks of discomfort, when remind they’re meant to work for and represent us are enough to cheer any grey Monday (tip of the tifta to Katabasis)

Censor the internet for the cheeeldren!

Internet filtering once more being pushed by the powers that be according to the Inquirer. Not going for out right censorship this time though, nope this time it’s for the children (as allegedly parents have been crying out to have the state block naughty things for their precious off spring as they can’t be arsed). So when you sign up to an ISP they’ll have to quiz you on who’s in your house and then encourage you to accept a suitable level of censorship. Of course the cynical amongst us might suggest this would then be pushed out to “nudge” the rest of us, after all once the government could censor everyone’s internet (well most peoples, there’ll always be work arounds) does anyone think they’ll be able to resist using it for other purposes for our health or to fight terrorism or climate change denial or what ever the current issue is? Fortunately yet again the ISPs aren’t so keen and are suggesting the government should maybe do this themselves and take the flak for it. Odd how like minimum pricing, plain packaging and more EU they keep suggesting some ideas over and over again until we stop saying no, but when we ask for a referendum on the EU or more freedom suddenly it’s already been settled.
