We shouldn’t accept the puritans frame of reference

This post first appeared on Drinkuary I’ve changed the title, and am adding this slight introduction. By accepting the puritans idea that there are irresponsible drinkers who it’s ok to punish we’re handing them victory from the outset. They are already accusing the drinks industry of using the tactic of the tobacco industry – I fear that hey may be right, that the drinks industry hasn’t learnt anything from the Puritans attack on tobacco and will use the same tactics with the same results. Tobacco control how daft can it get

The denormalisation of smoking continues with even candy cigarettes being restricted to over 18s, voluntarily of course – but then if even the sight of a packet of cigarettes can instantly cause a child to develop a 60 a day habit what perils being able to put a candy fag in a childs mouth. Of course this could be a tongue in cheek jibe on behalf of the retailer of sweeties, as after all if they were serious about protecting the children they wouldn’t sell any of the sweets to people under 60 without government authorization. More Olympic nonsense

I wasn’t going to write another article about the Olympics so soon honest I wasn’t and hopefully when they actually begin I’ll shut up about them. However it’s hard to keep quiet when it’s being proposed that there will be special Olympic Offences because it’s extra bad if you break the law in a way that disrupts the Olympics. So bad in fact that the supposedly neutral CPS “may appeal over sentences for Olympic-related offences if it felt they were too lenient.” Which I think most of us these days would read as “will appeal”.
