A final thought on the AV referendum

As I’m getting round to writing this way after everyone else, there’s not a lot left to say (which is good as I should be cooking my dinner). If you want an indepth analysis of how badly wrong the Yes campaign want then Liberal vision has it covered:
“In any two horse political race, it is damned near impossible to poll less than 40% of the vote. You have to be spectacularly inept or obscenely unpopular to drop below this figure. For example, no Republican or Democrat Presidential candidate in recent US history has fallen this far. Even Barry Goldwater, Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis – all famous for being electorally destroyed – managed to outscore the woeful YES percentage handsomely.”

From the thank you letter from the “Yes2AV” campaign I rather hope that they’re reasonably goods at logic as it starts:
“The votes from yesterday’s referendum have not yet been fully counted and verified, but it is clear that sadly the country has voted in favour of keeping First Past the Post.”
and ends:
“Everyone involved in Yes to Fairer Votes understands that change comes, but you have to want it – and fight for it.”

So I’d assume that the conclusion they’ve reached is that people don’t want AV, or possibly even change at all.

As Long Rider observes, some supporters of the yes campaign have gone from “how dare the No2AV people claim the electorate are stupid” to “the electorate are too stupid to understand” in the time it took to count the votes. But then as Mark Thomas observes in a referendum campaign there’s no penalty for either side in lying about everything- though it may just be that people are so angry with the LibDems that anything they support will fail. The only glimmer of hope for actually reforming our political system, which I think does need doing is that “71 per cent of the electorate do not actively support FPTP” so they may yet still support real reform.

Happy Europe day

I know it’s almost over and everyone else and their dog has already probably said everything that needs to be said, and certainly I’m going to add precious little new to the debate. All that said it would seem remiss to not give at least a passing nod to the event. Captain Ranty has marked the day in a thoroughly robust fashion but makes the ever valid point that it’s not Europeans that are a problem but the horrible imposed edifice that is the EU.

That it is imposed is made abundantly clear by the fact it’s illegal to say bad things about the EU (hat tip sackerson). Which may be why officials are reportedly being threatened with fines if public buildings do not fly the EU flag for a week from today – presumably replacing the Union flag if they only have one flagpole to hand. Meanwhile whilst this great celebration of the EU takes place they are quietly considering reinstating national border controls thus removing on of the big carrots the EU offered us (though thanks to our government we never really got to take full advantage of it) the ability to travel though out Europe as easily as within ones own country. It’s worth noting that currently if a Schengen country wants to mount border controls for security reasons Brussels has to approve first. Various reports suggest that the EU as a body is increasingly unpopular through out Europe, as if the various no votes to the Lisbon treaty didn’t prove that already, and with various countries past their eyeballs in debt the euro looks an increasingly shaky proposition. So what better time to celebrate the EU, and maybe ask if perhaps we can have a referendum to see if we want to stay invovled and spend yet more money bailing out the failing Euro states, they are after all all the rage at present. Unlikely I know given that all three major parties promised such a thing, and none have delivered yet – but maybe the SNP may yet cause such a thing to happen for as the Anglo Saxon Chronicle observes – if Scotland leaves the union then both Scotland and England/Wales/Northern Ireland would have to re-apply for membership. It would be interesting to see them try that without a referendum though they might just take the Irish approach and keep asking until we vote the “right” way.

1066 and all that

I had a couple of things I was going to write about tonight but a rather excellent article over on Orphans of Liberty about the destruction of British and English History gives me an excellent excuse to link to this video again:

So I’m going to do that instead and also say if you don’t already have a copy of 1066 and all that get one and if you do have a copy do all your friends have a copy? No? Well sort that out watch the video (again?) and go read the article on Orphans of Liberty, get a beer whist you’re at it – I did.
