Two appeals

The London looting, I’m really not sure it should be dignified as riots, destroyed many homes and businesses and London cleanup have links to many ways you can help. In the meantime here are two appeals by people whose probity I’d vouch for. Mark Thompson has opened a pledge bank to help rebuild Reeves the 150 year old family business that was burnt down in Croydon. Archbishop Cranmer has turned over his collection plat to help out Mr Biber, an 89 year old barber in Haringey whose shop was ransacked and looted. Mr Biber wasn’t insured. Is it getting quieter?

So far in London tonight at least things seem quieter, though equally that may be that it’s just being reported less. Whilst I’m very glad it’s quietened down it’s worrying as it hasn’t got quieter because the looters have been stopped, more they’ve simply stopped for now. This may be due to the vast numbers of police in the capital, if so that could be a problem as they’ll have to go home at soem point and really do we want our cities that heavily policed? Stony Stratford II

In case I ever doubt the value of even small protests ever again it’s with some cheer that I pass on reports that councillor Bartlet has withdrawn his motion to ban smoking in Stony Stratford – to allow those opposed to the ban time to prepare their arguments. The Boiling Frog and Dick Puddlecote have more details. Yes it was a small battle and yes he’ll no doubt try again, but these days I’ll take whatever victories I can. +20
